Some Results on Circuit Lower Bounds and Derandomization of Arthur-Merlin Problems

چکیده
We prove a downward separation for Σ2-time classes. Specifically, we prove that if Σ2E does not have polynomial size non-deterministic circuits, then Σ2SubEXP does not have fixed polynomial size nondeterministic circuits. To achieve this result, we use Santhanam’s technique [16] on augmented Arthur-Merlin protocols defined by Aydinlioğlu and van Melkebeek [1]. We show that augmented ArthurMerlin protocols with one bit of advice do not have fixed polynomial size non-deterministic circuits. We also prove a weak unconditional derandomization of a certain type of promise Arthur-Merlin protocols. Using Williams’ easy hitting set technique [20], we show that Σ2-promise AM problems can be decided in Σ2SubEXP with n c advice, for some fixed constant c.

A note on exponential circuit lower bounds from derandomizing Arthur-Merlin games
We present an alternate proof of the recent result by Gutfreund and Kawachi that derandomizing Arthur-Merlin games into P implies linear-exponential circuit lower bounds for E. Our proof is simpler and yields stronger results. In particular, consider the promise-AM problem of distinguishing between the case where a given Boolean circuit C accepts at least a given number b of inputs, and the cas...
متن کاملTighter Connections between Derandomization and Circuit Lower Bounds
We tighten the connections between circuit lower bounds and derandomization for each of the following three types of derandomization: general derandomization of promise-BPP (connected to Boolean circuits), derandomization of Polynomial Identity Testing (PIT) over fixed finite fields (connected to arithmetic circuit lower bounds over the same field), and derandomization of PIT over the integers ...
متن کاملLower Bounds for Swapping
We prove a lower bound for swapping the order of Arthur and Merlin in two-round MerlinArthur games using black-box techniques. Namely, we show that any AM-game requires time Ω(t) to black-box simulate MA-games running in time t. Thus, the known simulations of MA by AM with quadratic overhead, dating back to Babai’s original paper on Arthur-Merlin games, are tight within this setting. The black-...
متن کاملUniform Derandomization from Pathetic Lower Bounds
The notion of probabilistic computation dates back at least to Turing, who also wrestled with the practical problems of how to implement probabilistic algorithms on machines with, at best, very limited access to randomness. A more recent line of research, known as derandomization, studies the extent to which randomness is superfluous. A recurring theme in the literature on derandomization is th...
متن کاملTime-space Lower Bounds for Satisfiability and Related Problems on Randomized Machines
Computational complexity studies the resources required for computers to solve certain problems; deciding satisfiability of Boolean formulas is one of the most fundamental such problems. This thesis proves lower bounds on the time and memory space required to solve satisfiability and related problems on randomized machines. We establish the first randomized time-space lower bounds for the probl...
